  Chapter One

Rayne entered the double doors of the two-story building as she spotted James, the head of security. He was sitting at his desk near the front entrance waiting to greet anyone that stepped through those doors. She smiled at him while bobbing her head to the music that was blaring in her ears through a pair of yellow and white Beats by Dre. James smiled back at her as he watched her remove the headphones so she could speak to him.

“What’s up, James? How are you doing today?”

“Hey Rayne,” James spoke with a flirtatious smile. “I’m good; can’t complain. I haven’t seen you around here in like two weeks. How are you doing on this beautiful Friday afternoon?”

“I’m good. I can’t complain, either. Lord knows it could be worse.” She responded thinking that she was more than grateful for the opportunity that she’d finally gotten to further her music career.

“You’re right about that. So, are you almost done with your single?” He questioned.

“Yes, and I can’t wait to hear it on the radio.” She said feeling excited about the possibility of actually living out her dreams as a well-known R&B singer.

“I already know it’s gonna be a hit. Your voice is beautiful. Plus, you’re fly as hell, and not to mention very gorgeous.”

Rayne blushed from his compliment, and then said, “Aww, thanks James.”

“Well, it’s the truth.” He told her with a wink of the eye. He liked Rayne a lot, but he knew that she was off limits. Even though she was single and certainly able to mingle, no one in their right mind would push up on her. It was known that Chase Montgomery, his first cousin, and well known Ceo of A-Town Studios & Productions, was interested in her. Even though she wouldn’t give into temptation, everyone knew that it was just a matter of time.

Rayne looked down at her Burberry watch. It showed the time of 2:45p.m. Even though she was fifteen minutes early, she still wanted to get in the studio in hopes of shaking off the jitters. More than anything she just wanted to tie up the loose ends and complete her very first single.

“Has Chase made it here, yet?” She asked, not seeing his white Range Rover or his white Audi S8 parked out front of the building.

  “Yeah, he’s here.”

“Oh, I only asked because I didn’t see either one of his cars outside in the parking lot.” She said, now thinking that he must’ve rode with his right hand man, Jeremy. “I wanted to make sure that he’d be here for this wrap up session since we hadn’t really spoken to each other in a few days.”

James grinned a little thinking that her comment was quite funny, and then he said, “You know that Chase wouldn’t miss this session for nothing in the world. He is here every time you come to the studio. You need not worry about that.”

“James, please. You know it’s not like that.” She softly grinned, always fighting off the vibes that she and Chase had when they’d be around each other. “You know I’m not falling for a nigga that already has a woman. Don’t get me wrong. He’s been good to me in the past eight months that I’ve known him, but I can’t go there with him.”

James smiled as he leaned back in his seat. “I hear you,” he said thinking otherwise. He hadn’t met a woman yet that didn’t wish for Chase to be on their arms with his good looks, hefty bank accounts and smooth swag appeal.

“Did he ride with Jeremy today?” She pondered while ignoring his comment. “Because, I need a ride home after I leave here this evening.”

“Actually, Chase drove Brooke’s car today. It’s the brand new, white Camaro parked out there. Jeremy hasn’t even come in today at all.”

Rayne’s eyes stretched a little with curiosity. “Brooke’s car?” she questioned. “His baby mama, and or his live in girlfriend, Brooke?” she asked to make sure.

“Yep, we’re talking about the same lady.” He joked while trying to get Rayne to smile behind him saying some shit that he knew would have her thinking.

“I see,” Rayne said not knowing much about Brooke unless someone at the studio mentioned her. She never came around and Chase never talked about her. However, she was definitely a woman of interest since everyone she came in contact with had something to say about her. The thing that stood out to her was how they’d mention that in the beginning of Chase opening up the studio, Brooke would pop up out of nowhere and show her ass on him and the other women that she suspected he was seeing. She was quite a bold and feisty one they’d tell Rayne. Yet, in the eight months that she’d been coming around not once had she seen this infamous woman that Chase was involved with. Rayne wanted to know more about her and who she really was. After all, she was the main reason why she could never give Chase a real chance at dating her.

James noticed that Rayne was spaced out in her thoughts. He’d sensed exactly what she was thinking about and quickly steered the conversation back to what they were discussing. “Well anyway, you know you’ll have a ride home one way or the other.” He told her, causing her to snap back to reality while looking at him like her thoughts had never left.

“I may just have to take you up on that offer.” She said slightly smiling, and then she put her Beats back over her ears as she walked off, chunking him the deuces.

James softly chuckled as he watched her thick, shaky ass sway back and forth. He gazed at the back of her short, tan Guess skirt wishing he could see underneath it. He smiled with a shake of the head while noticing that her yellow and white beats also matched the fitted, yellow Guess t-shirt that hugged her mouthful of breasts. She seemed to be gracefully gliding across the floor in a pair of yellow Miu Miu wedges that accentuated her laid back, girly persona as she swung her Louis Vuitton Alma white, multicolored hand bag in her hand. She was indeed one of a kind and he couldn’t blame his cousin for trying to lock her down. If Chase hadn’t already invested so much time and money in her then he’d definitely be in the running of trying to win her over.

“Damn,” he whispered with a disappointing sigh while he stared at her until she disappeared around the corner.

“Pick your lip up, nigga.” Jeremy said as he entered the building. He took his Cartier shades off and stared over at James with a shake of the head. “You shouldn’t be sweatin’ your cousin’s woman like that.”

“Here this nigga go,” James muttered with a slick roll of the eyes followed by a fake laugh. “Ain’t nothing wrong with window shopping, Bro.” He joked.

“You right. It ain’t nothing wrong with window shopping, but ai
n’t no need to be shopping for items that are already off the market.”

“But, why is she off the Market? I don’t get that.” He said with a confused shake of the head. “She still hasn’t given him an answer and we both know that he ain’t hit it, yet. Shiiiit, you know for yourself that it doesn’t take Cuz that long to sniff the panties. So, what’s the deal? He may as well put her back on the market.”

Jeremy laughed with disbelief that James would act like he had amnesia. “Let me break this down for you since you acting like you’ve lost your damn mind today or something. Rayne is off limits. Chase has made a large investment in her. Because of him, she’s living in a nice condominium over in Buck Head. He pays all the bills and makes sure that she eats like a Queen every day. She even gets a weekly allowance to keep up her appearance and he’s already making plans to get her a new car. He’s straight up taking care of her. You know this shit. She may be acting all hard and shit and seeing his graciousness as an investment in her music career, but even she can’t deny the attraction they have for each other. My suggestion would be for you to back off and let Cuz handle his business accordingly.”

“I’m not over stepping my boundaries, lil Bro. I just like talking to her. She’s cool people.” James explained.

“Keep it that way.” Jeremy insisted.

“Don’t worry,” he stated with a sincere look. He smiled, but inside he disliked the fact that Chase and Jeremy acted more like brothers than they ever did. Chase was just their first cousin, but because he and Jeremy were closer in age and hung out more together, their bond was tighter. In a sense, he always felt left out, regardless of the love that they continually showed him after his fuck ups.

“Well, I’ll be in my office setting up studio time for a few people that are trying to get in here and show off their skills.”

“Or not,” James added with a light chuckle. “Let’s not kid ourselves. Most women come in here hoping to get laid. They no damn well they can’t sing or rap. Hell, if you want the truth, they ain’t skilled in nothing, but giving head and ridin’ dick.”

Jeremy laughed at his comment. “You right about that,” he said giving his brother dap as they continued to laugh. “Aye, before I forget to tell you, we’re going out this evening to discuss a few things concerning the business. Same spot as always.”

  “I’ll be there.” James said.

Jeremy started to walk off, but then stopped as he glanced back at his brother. “You good?”

James nodded his head. “Yeah, I’m good.” He answered.

“Cool, oh and buzz me if somebody comes in here looking for me. It depends on who it is if I’ll be busy or not.”

James chuckled, and then responded, “A’ight.”

  ***

Rayne stepped off of the small elevator onto the second floor. Instantly, she could feel the butterflies dancing inside of her stomach. The scent of Chase’s cologne instantly captured her attention. The more of it she smelled, the weaker she became as it lured her down the hall and straight to the control room doors. Without a doubt, he was somewhere on the other side of those doors.

She took in a deep breath at the same time of turning Pandora off on her iPhone 6. As she removed her headphones, she could hear her song playing from inside the studio. She smiled, still trying to shake off the jitters, and then she pushed the doors open and walked in.

Chase’s chair swung around as he greeted her with an enticing, handsome smile. Rayne smiled back at him. “What’s up, Chase?” she questioned while admiring the way he licked his lips before responding to her.

Chase first looked her over from head to toe. He was making a mental note of approval since the short tan skirt she had on caused his dick to jump inside of his Diamond Supply jeans.

Rayne snapped her fingers at him to get his attention. “Up here,” she said pointing at her face.

Chased smiled at her as his eyes followed from her nice, thick thighs up to her beautiful, brown eyes. He thought she was really pretty dressed like a school girl and even though she was twenty-four, she still had the looks of someone that was never going to age.

Chase cleared his throat, and then he finally said, “I’ve been working hard, baby doll. What’s up with you?”

“I’ve just been taking the voice lessons that you set up for me and relaxing my thoughts a little bit. Well, at least I’m trying. This song has me so hype. Plus, things are moving really quickly, almost like overnight it seems. Just standing in the hallway and hearing the beat of my song had me feeling full and somewhat overwhelmed.”

Chase stood up from the black, swivel chair. “You’ll be okay. Don’t get this close to fall apart.”

“I don’t think that I’m gonna fall apart. I just get overly anxious with how quickly things are moving. I mean, who would’ve thought that I’d go from living in the projects to living in the suburbs of Buck Head. Hell, I know it’s been almost two months, but I still have to get used to it. I’ve gone from singing in night clubs to make a decent living, to now being signed with A-Town Productions and working with Chase Montgomery, one of the hottest producers around.”

“Oh, so you think I’m hot?” Chase teased as he stepped up to her.

“Don’t do that. I’m already nervous enough.” She said as she looked up at him.

Chase was definitely one hot catch, but there was no way she’d accept being his side bitch. Unfortunately for him, when they’d first met, he straight out told her that he wasn’t leaving Brooke for nobody, but he’d take care of her like she was his main bitch. Something about that conversation didn’t sit right with her.

“Okay,” Chase said like he was about to back away, but instead he swiftly moved in for a warm hug. Rayne nearly melted in his secure grip. Her heart sped up as she stood there allowing Chase to make his moves, but she had no intentions of letting him win. His body was warm wrapped around hers as she stood there absorbing the sweet moment. He had a way with her like no man had ever had.

She’d been broken a time or two and was desperately trying to learn from those lessons. She was the woman that had been cheated on. She was the woman that had given it her all, yet he still cheated and did her wrong. There was no way she was traveling back down that road with a man that she’d know, without a doubt, was fooling around with someone else. That just wasn’t going to happen.

Rayne cleared her throat and backed away from Chase’s embrace. “You know we can’t keep doing this.” She said with a sincere bat of the eyes.

“I gave you a two week break to think things over. I didn’t even want you stepping foot inside the studio, because I wanted your thoughts to be clear and on point when it was time for us to finish this single. I also wanted to give you time to miss me.” He added smoothly grabbing her by the hand. “Did you miss me?”

Rayne blushed from Chase’s touch as she politely pulled away from him. He was a very attractive man with the perfect height of 6’3. His deep brown, round eyes stared gently into her soul which only made it that much harder for her to turn away from him. “See, I’m losing focus.” She teased, but was dead serious. She turned her back to walk away, but he stopped her.

“Rayne,” he softly called out. “Why do you make this so difficult? I’m trying here. I’ve made it very convenient for you around here. You see that I wanna be with you.”

“Wanting me isn’t the issue, because you can have all of me. I’ve never told you that you couldn’t. But, if I’m giving you all of me then I want all of you and we both know that can be an issue for you.”

“You don’t understand. It’s not that easy, baby doll.”

“I don’t understand what’s so hard about it if you don’t wanna be with her no more.” She then put her finger over his lip to hush the next words that were about to come out of his mouth. “I don’t wanna hear anything about the baby y’all have or that she stuck by you when no one else was there. I know you may feel obligated to stay with her, but you don’t have to be with her if you’re not ha
ppy.”

“It’s not that I’m not happy. I just can’t leave her; not right now, anyway.” He said almost confusing himself.

Rayne frowned. He never made any sense when it came to leaving Brooke. His conversations about her were always vague and she couldn’t read him or know exactly where he was coming from when it came down to his baby mama. So, she irritably shook her head, and then said, “And, that’s why I can’t be with you right now. I think that we need to get to work on this single.” She told him and before Chase could get out another word, she’d walked off in the direction of the sound booth.

Chase disappointedly shook his head feeling once again defeated, but there was no way that he was giving up on her. They had so much more in common and for once he could actually see himself settling down and finally marrying someone. The only problem he had was with Brooke and her selfish, needy ways. She’d use their son against him and anything else that she knew he’d bend for. What he couldn’t understand was how she could be the perfect woman at times, but she was also possessive and he didn’t like that side of her.

For the past year, he’d been trying his best to be that man, because being that man brought out the best in Brooke, but what did it bring out in him? He couldn’t deny loving her, but he hadn’t been in love with her for a long time. He realized that the day that Rayne stepped inside of his studio. Her free spirit and happy go lucky attitude reminded him of why he didn’t want to be with Brooke anymore. Fooling himself to be with someone just because of the circumstances wasn’t what he wanted at all. He wanted to be fully content in his life with someone that he could connect with on that level. The fizzle had fizzed out with him and Brooke a long time prior, but she was hell bent on not seeing it that way. As he sat down to recollect his thoughts about his situation, he looked up toward the sound of Rayne tapping on the glass window inside the sound booth.

“Come on, Chase. Let’s get to work.” She called out.

Chase smiled like he was unbothered by her latest rejection, and then sat back down in his swivel chair. He started playing the music for Rayne as she sat on a bar inside the booth bobbing her head with the headphones on. She was beautiful and definitely gifted, but more importantly he respected her grind and the way she carried herself. She wasn’t a pushover and she held strong to her beliefs about not being the other woman. She wasn’t settling for anything less and he couldn’t blame her. Why should she?
